Get ready for another season of romance, family drama, violence and betrayal as the Duttons gear up for the second half of Yellowstone season five.
The story of the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana, is now one of Paramount’s biggest successes. When Yellowstone returned to our screens in November of 2022, it received 12.1 million American viewers, which is more than a million more than the season four finale.
But in recent years, with reports of tension between the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan and its star Kevin Costner, behind-the-scenes conspiracies have begun to rival the drama itself. Amid rampant speculation, news finally broke last year that Costner would be leaving the series, with season five being Yellowstone’s last.
Last we saw the Duttons, John (Costner) was finding his footing as Montana governor, while Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) were engaged in an all-out war. Season four ended with a wedding, a court case, blackmail, and murder – so there’s a high hurdle for the season five finale, which we now know will also be the end of the same show that launched the Sheridanverse.
Is Kevin Costner Leaving Yellowstone?
Production on the final episodes of the fifth and final season will reportedly begin in late spring 2024, but Costner’s level of involvement in the remaining installments is still unclear. The actor revealed at a court hearing in September that he was initially offered $24 million to star in seasons 5, 6 and 7 of Yellowstone, but there were “creativity issues”.
According to Deadline, another source of controversy centered around the star’s shooting schedule. Costner reportedly wanted to spend more time on his upcoming multi-part Western film Horizon: An American Saga, a film in which he starred, directed, co-wrote, and produced.
The situation remains fluid – Costner said in September that he would “probably go to court” over Yellowstone’s exit – so it’s safe to say he almost certainly won’t be involved in a future spinoff.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 8 Recap
The midseason finale was expected to end with a serious and unsettling tone, but it pleasantly surprises us with a more optimistic resolution. Kayce and Monica have a heartfelt conversation about John’s proposal, which brings to light Kayce’s previous point of view where he had to choose between Monica and the Ranch.
However, instead of dwelling on the difficult decision, Monica wholeheartedly embraces the idea of a fresh start. She expresses a desire to possibly expand their family and hopes that this new beginning will eliminate Kayce’s need to make a choice, suggesting that they can have both a fulfilling relationship and a farm in their lives.
